Shakeela describes herself as “kind and helpful!” She can be shy when she initially meets someone but is a genuinely sweet person who warms up to new people. Shakeela enjoys reading, bowling, going to the movies and roller skating. She also enjoys swimming, basketball and cooking. Shakeela likes going to school and being with her friends. She receives mostly A’s and some B’s in school. She reports, “I am very smart and my favorite subject is Social Studies!” When not in school she enjoys taking the time to sit down and read. At times, Shakeela can have difficulty expressing her feelings causing her to act out negatively. However, she has made significant progress with learning how to control and cope with her emotions. Shakeela needs an adoptive family who will be patient and understanding. The family should have experience or some working knowledge of parenting children who have come from a difficult past. The adoptive family has to be able to advocate for Shakeela’s needs with support, counseling, life skill or any other resources available that can help her grow and flourish. The family needs to be willing to have an extended visitation period to help Shakeela feel comfortable around them. It is important to Shakeela that she maintains contact with her siblings and her foster family as they have formed close relationships.
