Weigh-ins will be at “The Fort”  Friday the 26^th at 7:00pm.   Professional Boxer BUSTER DOUGLAS will be there as well.

Let’s play ball! Miguel is an eager and active eight year old boy with lots of energy and enthusiasm for football and other gross motor activities. Miguel loves to eat out and he is especially fond of spicy foods! Miguel loves all kinds of animals and he is fascinated with fish aquariums. Miguel is a hard worker in school and despite some cognitive delays, he continues to make slow but steady progress. Miguel is currently being re-evaluated for a 504 plan so that he can have more success in the classroom setting. Miguel’s teachers have only good things to say about his personality and Miguel gets along with his peers very well in the school setting. Miguel loves to read aloud to anyone who wants to sit and cuddle up in a chair and he enjoys the challenge of books with hidden pictures such as “I Spy” books.

Miguel does attend some special appointments on a weekly basis and this will continue once he is placed. Miguel would do very well in a home with older children or as an only child where he can get lots of attention. Families interested in adopting Miguel will need to be very invested in Miguel’s educational needs and his emotional needs as well as Miguel makes a transition from foster home to adoptive home.

Ryheam is a 14 year old boy who enjoys many activities.  Ryheam has varied interests such as, soccer, basketball, swimming, skateboarding, drawing, reading, and video games.  He is very outgoing, positive and energetic.  He strives to make others happy.  Ryheam is very curious and likes to ask questions.  Ryheam continues to mature and is a leader in his current placement.  His current dream is to be in the Army or the Marines.

Ryheam has been diagnosed with ADHD, ODD, and has a learning disability.  However, he is making progress in his school work and is a hard worker He is easily distracted and forgetful.  Ryheam is looking for a forever home with parents who are loving, understanding, and patient.  Ryheam would also like a family who will allow him to keep in contact with his grandmother.

According to his current foster parents, John loves praise, attention and responds well to their reward system. He is described as sweet and affectionate. John has experienced many loses in his short life and has said he would like a life long family.

Washington, DC—January 4, 2012—

Late Tuesday night, January 1, Congress passed the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (H.R. 8), legislation that included a permanent extension of the adoption tax credit. President Obama signed the bill into law Wednesday.

Since it was established in 1997, the adoption tax credit has helped thousands of American families offset the high cost of adoption or meet their adopted children’s special needs. The credit was set to virtually disappear as of December 31, 2012. Earlier this year, the Adoption Tax Credit Working Group Executive Committee established four priorities for an adoption tax credit that is inclusive, permanent, refundable, and flat for special needs adoptions.

“By making the adoption tax credit permanent, Congress has renewed its commitment to finding a safe and loving homes for children in need,” said Kathleen Strottman, Executive Director of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI). CCAI serves as the Secretariat of the Adoption Tax Credit Working Group Executive Committee. “We are thrilled that three of the four priorities established by the Executive Committee were included in this legislation. Unfortunately, without making the adoption tax credit refundable, many adoptive families of foster children with special needs will not be able to benefit from the credit.”

The bill permanently extends the adoption tax credit and income exclusion for employer paid or reimbursed adoption expenses. While official estimates will be released later by the IRS, the projected maximum amount of the adoption credit for 2013 is expected to be $12,770.

The benefits of the adoption tax credit reach beyond the children who are adopted. A 2006 study cited by the Children’s Bureau found that taxpayers save as much as $126,000 for every child who is adopted instead of remaining in long-term foster care. Significant savings to society are also achieved because children who are adopted fare better than those who live out their childhood in foster care. With more than 100,000 children in U.S. foster care waiting to be adopted, and countless millions of children worldwide without families, the continuation of the adoption tax credit helps provide love, safety, and permanency to many of these children.

Sixteen-year-old Travis has an inquisitive nature about him. He has a wonderful imagination and likes to learn how things work. Travis understands and can relate well when things are explained to him. He strives to do well in school and really enjoys going. He has worked hard to learn appropriate ways of relating to others and is justifiably very proud of the progress he has made in this area. Travis has a bubbly personality and energetic way of speaking, though he often needs prompts to begin conversations. Once Travis gets talking about a subject he is interested in, his whole face will light up and he will begin exuberantly sharing his thoughts. He has a great sense of humor that is fun to be around and his sweet smile and happy disposition are frequently observed by many.

Travis’ forever family will be able to enjoy Travis’ bright and friendly personablity. A busy, yet not overly active family would be a good match. The family will need to provide clear expectations and boundaries, close supervision, and a structured lifestyle. They will also need to be patient with Travis as he transitions into their home, as he has endured significant trauma in his past. Travis is resilient and has overcome a lot throughout his time in foster care. He has a positive outlook and has displayed great patience in the search for finding his forever family. However, Travis has waited too long… it’s his turn to shine!

Deja in an active teenager who has many interests and loves to laugh. She describes herself as “kind, intelligent, and enthusiastic.” Deja enjoys her Kindle Fire where she can read and listen to all kinds of music on, especially country. She enjoys singing and simply likes having fun and laughing. Deja loves her literature class at school, enjoys reading, and notes her favorite book is Little Women. Deja’s personality has been described as intelligent, humorous, sociable, and caring. Deja’s personal qualities and attributes shine the brightest when she is in a small personal setting. She is learning how to manage her emotions effectively and develop positive peer relationships.

According to Deja, she has expressed that she would like to have a strong femal role model in the home, such as a single mother. Deja is very comfortable around all types of people and is open to any type of community. The adoptive family must also be vocal advocates to ensure that Deja is receiving all of the support she may need at home, in the community, and at school. Deja has mentioned that is important for her to maintain a relationship with her sister.

Otis is an African American male child born January of 2010. Otis is an amazing child who has survived through a lot in his young life. Otis has some medical needs that require 24 hour care, and will likely need it for the rest of his life. Otis needs a family that will understand his medical needs, and provide him with as much stimulus as possible to help him to develop to his full potential. Any interested families should live close to hospitals and medical centers. He doesn’t always give expressions, but he can recognize his care giver’s voice. He doesn’t smile often, but when he does he lightens up the room. Otis needs a committed family that is willing to love a child with a lot of special needs, and will understand his medical needs.
